Who doesn’t love a good red wine (okay, we know some people don’t…)? But we must all agree that red wine stains are quite scary, especially if they are on our nice carpet.

To help you solve this problem, we have some tips for you, but you have to act fast as the key to getting rid of red wine stains is to get onto it as soon as possible, so the stain doesn’t set into the fibre.

So, how can you remove red wine stains from carpet and upholstery items?

  • First of all, you should use either clean white cloths or paper towels to blot up as much of the red wine as possible. The idea, though, is to gently patch while soaking up the wine. Do not rub as it will just spread the stain. Keep changing the cloth or paper towel for as long as you can. The more you can remove, the better the chances of removing the stain. Hint: use a white cloth/paper towel, so you can easily see if there is still wine stain coming through!

  • Apply a bit of cold water to the stain to keep it wet. With a clean white cloth or paper towel, dab it until no more stain comes out. Dry stains are much harder to remove. VERY IMPORTANT: do not apply hot water as this will set the stain.

  • Prepare a mixture of baking soda and cold water. The measure you should use is one part of baking soda to three parts of water.

  • Apply the paste onto the carpet/upholstery and let it air dry. Once it is dry, vacuum it all up. You should have a clean carpet/upholstery ready for the next one!

  • If the stains sets into the fibre, however, and doesn’t come out completely, it is time to call the professionals. Trying to use something else could damage your carpet and stain it even further. In this case, M&Co Cleaning can help you out – just give us a call!
